The 54mbps is the speed at which you have connected to your modem, however the modem is connected to your Internet provider at a speed of 1.5mbps and nothing except ringing them up and changing plans will speed up or slow down your connection to them.
Go here and test your speed:

It should be about 1400-1500kbps depending on if anything else is downloading or not.
Chances are what you are seeing is the connection speed from your PC to the router, hub or modem. It may not necessarily mean that is the Internet connection speed. This may also be affected by the type of connection you use inside your house, like wireless or wired.
You can use one of these sites to see how fast your connections is working.

Ok, pretty much the speed of communication between ur computer to ur router is 54mbps, from router to mdm thru ethernet is 100mbps, from mdm to internet thru your provider right now is on 1.5mbps. Dsl thru your provider is usually limited to about 7.2mbps as the fastest speed that you can get. Now if you have fiber up to your residence then you have to get different equip but can get 12mbps. So as of right now the speed from your provider is the fastest speed that your going to have is 1.5mbps. You can upgrade with ISP to get faster speed and all your other equip will be able to handle these speeds. The only thing that is limiting you right now is ISP(internet service provider). Your equipment that you have has the lowest speed of 54mbps on your wireless so IF isp could get that fast that would be the only limiting factor.
