Setting up a wired printer to print wireless?

by DSLModem on May 26, 2010

Stupid Question Time. I have a Linksys WRT54G, desktop connected to a Qwest DSL modem (Actiontec GT701) HP PSC 1600 printer and a Gateway laptop. My goal is to print from laptop to desktop computer is a glorified paperweight. I can access the wireless router laptop as a desktop computer has more problems than I care to worry about. Is there a creative (ie cheap) to work with the printer so you do not need the laptop and connect to the printer each time? I have a D-Link wireless router is not used, and the office is not really an option. If I have to bite the bullet and buy somthing to connect the printer to the router that I want, but I hope that there is no way to work with what Tracy and Taba déjà.L Thanks! I thought that was the case, but wanted to check. Thanks for the info! saved me many hours of research!

Unfortunately unless you have the printer connected to a computer you will need to get a “Print Server” to connect.

You can get either wired or wireless print servers. They simply connect to the printer and then connect to the router. Wired ones use ethernet cable for that wireless ones allow the printer to become wireless.

Wired print servers are fairly cheap if you shop around (use the net). Wireless are more expensive. Either one will work, get one that supports your operating system.

Here is a wired one for $15.00

You wont be able to you the dlink router as a printserver sorry. You will have to bite the bullet and either buy a wireless print server so you can have the printer anywere you want or purchase a wired print server if you plan on putting the printer by the router.

Set up your desktop as a sort of print server.
Plug in the printer to the desktop and tell the computer to share over the network connection. Make sure oyu are both on the same workgroup if your not on Vista.
i have the same set-up at home.
